About this conversation
Chip Conley and Rosalind Watts join Fede Menapace to explore awe, connectedness and the ways people make room for a wider perspective. Recorded on April 22, 2026, the conversation considers nature, music, shared experiences and acts of kindness.
Chip discusses awe as an invitation to see beyond a familiar view of yourself. Rosalind describes three forms of connectedness: connection with yourself, with other people and with the wider world. She also reflects on why being outdoors with someone else can feel different from being there alone.
The discussion brings together personal perspectives and ideas from the speakers' work. It does not establish what any individual will experience on retreat. Our research hub separately explains the evidence and its limitations.

Chip Conley on shared experiences
Number two was the thing called collective effervescence, which is when our sense of ego separation declines or evaporates and our sense of communal joy grows. This is very much a Burning Man kind of experience, but it could be at a gospel choir on a Sunday morning. It could be at a sporting event. It could be at a theater event. It could be in a workshop.
Rosalind Watts on connectedness
I've come to the idea of connectedness as being really important. The three parts of connectedness: connectedness to self, connectedness to others, and connectedness to the wider world.
Rosalind Watts on noticing nature together
It's really hard if it's a gray day, the weather's not great, the nature's not particularly vast and huge and incredible. To really connect to the beauty, I think sometimes you need somebody else with you to help you.
