The spirit behind Beckley

Amanda Feilding described the Beckley Foundation as her art project.

A scientific research institution, imagined as a work of art. That idea captures something essential about the spirit behind Beckley: rigorous inquiry and a profound appreciation for the mystery of being alive.

Amanda helped advance the scientific study of psychedelics. Her curiosity also reached into consciousness, creativity, and the richness of human experience. At Beckley Retreats, we carry that spirit into how we design our programs.

We care about what happens in the brain. We also care about what it feels like to walk through a garden with renewed attention, hear a piece of music deeply, or sit across from another person and feel understood.

“The most beautiful thing we can experience is the mysterious.”Albert Einstein

Our approach makes room for that mystery, alongside careful screening, professional standards, and thoughtful support.

01 / Perspective

A meeting of traditions and modern care

Clarity.
Connection.
Creativity.
Meaning.

Longstanding ceremonial traditions offer deep appreciation for intention, ritual, community, and our relationship with nature. Modern research and professional practice contribute methods for assessing suitability, understanding risk, and building accountable systems of care.

Beckley brings these perspectives together in a program designed for personal growth and wellbeing.

Our programs are exclusively for people assessed as suitable for a nonclinical retreat. We serve people seeking greater clarity, connection, creativity, and meaning. We do not provide treatment for psychiatric conditions.

Being well does not mean that life is effortless or complete. You may be navigating a transition, reconsidering familiar patterns, or sensing that there is more to life than your current routines allow.

Our responsibility begins with determining whether this environment, and this level of support, is appropriate for you.

A considered space

Beckley offers a screened, nonclinical wellbeing program. Its design draws on longstanding ceremonial wisdom and modern professional practice while remaining distinct from both clinical care and unregulated settings.

02 / Care

Care begins
before you arrive

PreparationRetreatIntegration

A meaningful experience starts with preparation.

Our screening process helps us understand each person’s health history, circumstances, and intentions. Preparation gives guests time to ask questions, build relationships, and develop practices they can draw on during the retreat.

We operate our psilocybin retreats in legal settings, with professional safety protocols and insurance coverage supporting our operations.

That structure continues through the retreat and into the return home. Integration provides space to reflect, make sense of experiences, and translate insights into everyday choices: how we relate, what we prioritize, and how we care for ourselves.

The measure of the experience includes the life that follows it.

The science of setting

Why the surroundings matter

Research increasingly suggests that the social and sensory environment can shape an experience. The group, the natural world and music are not simply decoration. They influence attention, emotion and the sense of connection people carry with them.

01 / Together

The group

In a prospective study of 886 people attending ceremonies and retreats, a sense of shared humanity was associated with later wellbeing and social connectedness. Supportive relationships, emotional support and personal sharing all contributed to that sense of togetherness.

02 / Outside

Nature

A prospective study found that people reported greater connection with nature after their experiences, and that change was associated with wellbeing. The perceived influence of natural surroundings during the experience helped predict the change.

03 / Listening

Music

Music can focus attention, bring emotion and memory forward, and give an experience a sense of movement. In a small qualitative study, participants described music as a central influence, sometimes welcome and sometimes difficult. That is why sensitivity and responsiveness matter.

Kaelen et al., 2018 · Imperial College London and Beckley Foundation

These studies help explain why we design the environment with care. Two are observational and one involved 19 participants in a clinical study. They do not establish the effectiveness of the Beckley program or predict any individual outcome.

03 / Artistry

Beauty belongs
in the experience

We believe set and setting deserve care at every level: the mindset you bring, the people around you, and the environment in which the experience unfolds.

Nature, live music, thoughtfully prepared food, and welcoming spaces are central to our approach. So are silence, rest, laughter, and unhurried conversation.

“Music and art are, to an extent, also attempts to solve or at least to express the mystery.”Max PlanckWhere Is Science Going?

There is artistry in how these elements come together. The pacing of a day. A musician’s sensitivity to a room. A meal that invites people to linger. Time outside with nothing to accomplish.

We design for these moments because attention, pleasure, and connection belong in a life well lived.

We also value the people and places that make each retreat possible: the food, music, landscape, and local culture that give a place its character.

04 / Wonder

Room for your
own understanding

People arrive with different beliefs and different ways of making meaning.

Our approach welcomes that diversity. You can bring scientific curiosity, spiritual questions, or simply a desire to understand yourself more fully. There is room for uncertainty, and room to find your own language for what you experience.

The group offers companionship in that exploration. Being listened to, sharing a meal, and discovering common ground can become meaningful parts of the experience themselves.

Ultimately, our invitation is to approach life with greater attention: to notice beauty, deepen relationships, and remain open to wonder.
